Day 18: August 13, 2011

Today ended up being a great day. I finally did something exciting and am learning to enjoy my time here more. I think the stresses of the week and classes just got to me, and the fact that I'm sick in a foreign country. But I went out and enjoyed myself and saw some new things and took advantage of this opportunity like everyone told me to do. So where was my grand adventure, you ask?

The Beijing Zoo! I took the bus to the 动物园 (Dongwu Yuan) stop, then walked up the street and across a bridge to the Beijing Zoo. On the way, I had to ask two people for directions, leading to my next encounter with native speakers. I just had to ask them where the zoo was just to make sure I was going in the right direction, which I was not, so it was a good thing I asked someone!

I saw so many animals at the zoo. Elephants, giraffes, wolves, tons of birds, reptiles, and of course the pandas!! There was so much to see, I can't even remember it all, so it's a good thing I took lots of pictures. The most exciting thing I saw was the giraffes, I think, and the elephants and pandas were pretty awesome too. It took me almost 5 hours to walk around the whole zoo because there was so much to see. I bought some ice cream and some chopsticks (kuaizi), too, which was my first purchase other than food!

There were tons of people at the zoo. Beijing really is an extremely crowded and busy city. Like I said in a previous blog post, you are never alone here. The business is sometimes overwhelming. My worse experience so far with the crowds has been today. I was waiting in line to buy my ticket, and the woman behind me was practically standing on top of me and would not move away! It was so irritating and I wanted to yell at her to stop touching me. People are really pushy in Beijing and they are not the least bit phased if you shove or push them back. When they want to go somewhere, they go, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. If someone is in the way, they will do whatever it takes to get by them. That is one thing I don't like about Beijing. People here aren't polite, and that is one thing I miss about America. They are very impatient here. While it seems like Americans can be rude and pushy too, they are nothing compared to the people of Beijing.

The people also don't have the same respect for animals as we do in America. Despite the many signs stating not to tap on the glass or feed the animals, I saw so many people throwing food into enclosures and trying to pet the animals. The enclosures at the zoo were also very close to the people, making it really easy for them to poke at the animals and touch them. It made me really sad to see that the animals were treated like this, and that the people don't have respect for them. In America I've never seen anything like this. People occasionally tap on the glass of enclosures or poke their fingers in the cages, but nothing to the extent of what I saw at the Beijing Zoo.

Another thing I discovered about Beijing deals with the buses. I did not know the meaning of a crowded bus in Beijing until today. There was no room to walk or move at all. I was on a bus with two levels, and there was barely room for new people to come on. At the stop I got on at, we pushed and shoved before finally all getting on the bus, and then the lady (who is kind of like a conductor I guess) was herding us like sheep and telling us to go here and there. Hopefully I won't have to go on such a crowded bus again.

Finally I got home and ate some dinner. Tonight it was mantou (buns), some greenbean-like vegetable, cabbage-like vegetable, and cauliflower. Tomorrow Jing Jing and I are supposed to go to Tian'an'men Square and the Forbidden City. Hopefully the trip will be fun. I'm looking forward to it and looking forward to buying some more souvenirs.

Tomorrow I'll post pictures of my adventures this weekend. Everyone have a nice weekend!

Day 17: August 12, 2011

Nothing much new to report today. I got my voice back finally, but it's really weird sounding and not all the way better. Also, my nose is now stuffy, so I'm just getting a cold. Wish I wasn't sick, but nothing much I can do about it except take medicine and blow my nose a lot.

Today's class went all right. I'm really glad it's Friday so I can relax some and catch up on reviewing the lessons. Too many characters to remember in too short of a time period! But I'll have to do some studying/preparing at some point this weekend if I want to be ready for next week's classes and then the test the following week.

Tomorrow I want to go to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. I asked Jing Jing, but she can't go...and I don't have any friends here. So maybe I will wait and go next weekend, but I really want to get out and see some things and not be stuck at home all day. I just wish I had someone to go with. But it's hard to make friends with the people in my classes when I don't live on campus and when they also don't speak English. Oh well, I will have to figure out something else to do if I don't go to Tiananmen and the City. Maybe I can go shopping or ask my host mom to take me somewhere exciting if she's not busy.

It's very hard to be here with not really anyone to talk to. My host parents don't get home until very late most nights (10pm or later), and I haven't seen my host mom since Sunday night, except in passing. Hopefully this weekend we will get to talk more. Maybe tomorrow I will go to the shops down the street and try to talk to the owners there, or wait at the bus stop and talk to people, just so I can get some practice in and have something to do.

Hope everyone has a good weekend. I'll try to make the best of mine.

Day 16: August 11, 2011

I want to go home.
I wish I could go home. Not that I am having a bad time. But I just want to be at home with everyone. I've had a good time here, but now I feel done with it. Spending two more weeks here isn't ideal. I know it will probably go pretty fast, but just thinking about it makes me not want to be here even more, and makes me dread the next two weeks. It's hard to explain. I'm not necessarily sad right now being away from home. But I just want to see everyone and do things I normally do at home.

It doesn't help that I still can't really talk. Hopefully my voice will be back tomorrow, because being a mute is really not fun at all. If I was a mute for forever, I think I would go crazy.

Tomorrow is Friday, then I only have one more week of classes left. Hopefully this weekend will go okay. I really want to get out and see more of Beijing, and I know if I do that I will start having a better time again and time will pass faster so I can get home quicker.

I'd better get to bed. Goodnight everyone!

Day 15: August 10, 2011

Today I still had no voice when I woke up. And it is still missing. My host dad got me some medicine at the store, so hopefully I will be better tomorrow. Until then, I will have to communicate by sign language and whispering.

My adventure today concerns Walmart. I got back from studying early because my tutor had something to do, so we are going to make up the lost time tomorrow and Friday. So when I got home, I ate some lunch and studied and read a little bit. Around 5 I decided I wanted to figure out where Walmart is located.

I found that it's only two bus stops away (about a 15 minute walk), so I went out to find it. When I got there, it was kind of exciting because it was something familiar that we have in the US. But it was still different than America of course. They had a grocery in the Walmart, like many do in the U.S. But then they also had a food bar-like thing, like something you would see at Wegmans instead of Walmart. They have lots of clothes and school supplies, computers and movies just like American Walmarts.

The thing that I went to Walmart for in the first place was medicine. I thought for sure it would be there. If not at Walmart, where would you find medicine? But when I got there, I couldn't find it! Finally I asked someone (which was really hard because I had no voice and I had to communicate in Chinese). They told me that they didn't sell medicine at Walmart...The only thing I could think was "How could you not sell medicine at Walmart!?" I was completely baffled by this fact. No medicine in a Walmart seems so strange to me. Not to mention the fact that I really wanted medicine for my throat so I can talk!

So after walking around a bit more, I bought a few things and then headed home. Jing Jing asked my host dad to bring home some medicine for me, and then she made us dinner. We had rice; cooked egg, tomato, and cucumber; and some cabbage-like vegetable tonight. Everything was really good again.

The other night I had my first apple since being in China, and it was delicious! I also had my first bowl of cereal the other morning, which is not as good as in America but it was still nice to have. Today I bought some apples and bananas, so tomorrow for lunch I'll be taking an apple with me. I can't wait to finally eat some more fruit.

明天见!

Day 14: August 9, 2011

So I've been here two weeks!! Two down, two to go. Sometimes time seems really slow, and other times I can't believe I've already spent two weeks here. I've been so busy doing lots of things, which makes time go by fast, but at the same time I can't wait to get back home and see everyone because I miss them all.

Class went okay today. Laoshi (teacher) forgot to tell us to skip 第八课 (lesson 8) and prepare for 第九课 (lesson 9) instead, so we weren't really prepared for today's class. Other than that, it went well, and I think I am starting to understand her speaking more and I am able to follow along a lot better it seems like, which is pretty exciting! I am learning a lot of new words, but I just wish we were learning how to write them also, and I wish it wasn't so fast-paced, but that's what I get for only staying here a month. I'm dreading the flight home. It wasn't bad coming here at all. I didn't feel sick or nauseous. It's just the fact that I know that I have to sit on the plane for 14 hours, and that is what is making me squirm.

But enough about that. So after class I bought something to eat. I got this bun/croissant with chocolate in it and it was so good because it tasted like chocolate frosting and reminded me of a cupcake, which I miss because they don't really have much dessert here. I have been getting ice cream a few days on the way home because it's been so hot out, and I bought some dove chocolate, but you don't see many people eating desserts in China.

Today I also lost my voice. My throat hurt on Sunday when I woke up, got better yesterday, then hurt yesterday night and through today. By 7:30 tonight I had no voice. Jing Jing gave me some throat lozenges and hot water. My family asked if I wanted to go to the doctor, but I said I would be fine, and if tomorrow I feel bad I will go get medicine or have them take me to the doctor. Hopefully it will pass tonight and I will be ready for the day tomorrow.

One last exciting thing that happened today: we had a huge thunderstorm. This is only the third time it's rained since I've been in Beijing. The other two times weren't that bad, but this storm was full of tons of lightening and really loud thunder and heavy rain. Our windows were open in the apartment and rain came in and soaked the floors! I had to run and shut my window, but not before it drenched the windowsill and part of the floor. Despite this, I am glad it rained because it was a really cool storm and also helped the weather cool down. Now there is a nice breeze coming through my window and I don't even have to use the fan at the moment. It's supposed to be really hot again tomorrow, but hopefully the rain will have cooled things down a bit.

Until next time!
